Forcing earliest release tags

I have just scanned a hundred tracks from a 60's CD compilation. Problem is that the earliest releases for these tracks (on CD) are quite recent, while the original tracks (vinyl) are decades earlier.

I was wondering if there's a way to instruct Picard to force using earliest release data forcibly, such as
- Album
- Date

Coule be this a feature request? In this scenario, Picard could (on demand) disable other release specific tags to avoid misleading info in tags, for example Vinyl release data vs CD release data.

Maybe this could accomplished with a script?

I'm trying to come up with a way to sort multiple releases into individual folders, such as remasters/international versions/rereleases with bonus tracks while keeping the original release date at the beginning of each album folder.
Picard breaks Apple Lossless files when writing to NAS

This is odd. I've had my files on my NAS for several months now, but only recently has the problem arisen. Previously, Picard handled the files just fine. Now whenever I try to tag Apple Lossless m4a files, the tags are written correctly, and the files are moved to the correct folders. However, many/most of the files will not play in iTunes, and crash VLC.

The untagged files play fine. If I copy the untagged files to my internal HD and run Picard from there, no problems.

This problem has only developed in the last few weeks. Has anyone else had similar problems, with or without a NAS? I appreciate that using a NAS complicates things, but considering that it worked fine for months, I'm concerned that the issue may be with Picard.

Also, this morning Picard was crashing when I tried to use it to tag files on the NAS.

MP3s seem to be unaffected.

Clueless newb looking for tag/renaming help

Hi. Sorry to clog up the forum with such a simple, basic thread, but the tag documentation is a bit byzantine, and for some reason my mind just gets completely overwhelmed at even the faintest hint of RegEx.

I'm looking to organize my collection like so:

\%artistname% - (%year%) %albumname%\##. %songtitle%

\%artistname% - (%year%) %albumname%\#-##. %songtitle%

and

\Various Artists - (%year%) %albumname%\##. %artistname% - %songtitle%

So, sample output:

\The Beatles - (1966) Revolver\07. She Said She Said.mp3

\The Beatles - (1973) 1962–1966\2-04. Day Tripper.mp3

and

\Various Artists - (2013) A Bunch of Hipsters Sing Beatles Songs\03. Dreary Girl with Acoustic Guitar - Yellow Submarine.mp3

Untagged stuff could remain where it currently is, or moved in current directory/name structure to \untagged\<same old folders / names as before> - not too picky, and I imagine once I get the above, I'll be comfortable enough to manage this part on my own.

If detecting multi-disc sets is still finicky, I'd be fine with 1.## - I'd leave that judgement call up to someone with more Picard experience than myself.

So what would the code for this look like?

Once again, I'm really sorry for such a me-centric "do my homework for me" newbie question - it'd be nice if there was a sticky thread that had a large OP showing various input/output samples. Looked through http://forums.musicbrainz.org/viewtopic.php?id=514 of course, but the images are mostly broken and really all I'd want is one post with multiple examples.

http://forums.musicbrainz.org/viewtopic … 689#p20689 <-- this is a really good idea, too, in case any coders happen to be reading this.

Thanks in advance to whoever helps me out :)

Convincing Picard to ignore Netatalk's .AppleDouble directories

I use Picard on a UNIX system, but I share the filesystem out over samba and netatalk. Netatalk, to emulate Mac resource forks, stores files in a directory called .AppleDouble in the same directory as the files. So, for any given album I'll have both

[...]/album/track01.flac
[...]/album/.AppleDouble/track01.flac

since the .AppleDouble file is usually just a few bytes in size, picard throws all kinds of errors (mutagen, really, but still).

Every time I upgrade, I have to re-hack to make picard ignore these files. The latest version of Picard is so optimized that it gave me fits. I'm posting my patch here in hopes that someone else will find it useful.

find the tagger.py file in the picard directory and change

return (os.path.join(root, f) for f in files)
to
return (os.path.join(root, f) for f in files if os.path.basename(unicode(root)) != '.AppleDouble')

I'm not a python user so I can't tell you how optimal this is, but this works.

Improving "tag match" status in user interface

Dear all,

I'm heavily using MB Picard for tagging my digital music library (FLAC representations of my releases for use in my "media center").

I like to have the metadata for each release and recording up to date, and know I can do so with MB Picard. When I edit a release on MB, I refresh the entry in MB Picard and changed entries will display a star in the release title.

However, if you have >100 releases (which one quickly builds up over the years), it's not as simple to hunt for "stars" in the right pane of MB Picard. I could blindly save all, but I prefer to review individual differences to see if I agree with the proposed tag edits.

For this I'd suggest to add the following improvements to MB Picard:

1. Allow to filter "exact matches" for releases as well as recordings (releases / recordings that are 100% tagged as on the main MB database)

2. Improve the visual feedback on the right pane to better detect tagging discrepancies between a local copy and the MB database. This could be achieved by adding columns for what is now one single column with the release title and a couple important info hints between brackets)

Would this be possible?

Releasetype In Script; Random Order Processing; Refresh File Browser

I have been using Picard for a couple years now and am overall very impressed with it but I am having three issues with the latest couple of versions, which I feel the need to try to get resolved.

First Issue: Renaming script output when using the releasetype field if multiple release types are listed.

The change to include both primary and secondary releasetype in the same tag has caused my renaming script to no longer function correctly. Instead of getting a folder called "compilation" I get "album; compilation" and I have the same problem with live albums and soundtracks. I really do not want to rename yet again all the existing files in my collection to match the way my script is currently sorting my files but would rather be able to just use the last release type listed.

I already have to manually edit the catalognumber and label fields for most multi-disc releases as I use both in my script and multi-disc releases usually include the same record label multiple times with a duplicate entry for each catalog entry. This is usually once for the actual cat # plus once for each disc. One rather extreme example of this would be releaseid "4bac99b7-8fe8-4a08-be9f-cd25280a7bae" which is Fleetwood Mac's "The Complete Blue Horizon Sessions: 1967-1969" which return the following data for label and catolognumber fields when called by a renaming script:

Blue Horizon; Blue Horizon; Blue Horizon; Blue Horizon; Blue Horizon; Blue Horizon; Blue Horizon
    73003-2; 73003-2(1); 73003-2(2); 73003-2(3); 73003-2(4); 73003-2(5); 73003-2(6)

As I prefer to have the files for each disc in a folder using the cat # which actually corresponds to the correct disc, I don't see a way to automate the process. The seemingly endless number of record labels each seems to use a different way of cataloging multi-disc releases. Release types on the other hand are limited to a finite number. If I knew how to just get just the last releasetype listed when using the releasetype field in my string it would save me from having to rename the folders manually every time I tag a compilation, live album or soundtrack.

Second Issue: Random Order File Processing effects on Improper Processing Termination and the Remove Perfect Albums plug-in.

I can't remember which Picard release caused this change but somewhere two or three versions ago the tagger stopped processing the queue of files to be saved in the order they are listed in and started just randomly tagging files in some seemingly random order. I honestly don't know if this was to more efficiently process all files or which way is faster. I also don't know the implications as far as disc access read and write times. I really don't care. All I care about is that not renaming the files in order both complicates finding what has and hasn't been done should the process be terminated improperly and renders the Remove Perfect Albums plug-in virtually useless as you can have half of the files processed but still only remove a small number of releases when using the plug-in since very few of the releases will actually have finished processing. Every time a new release of Picard comes out I hope to see this has gone back to the old way and each time I have been sad to see it hasn't been fixed. I can't be the only user who has a problem with this but I haven't seen it previously listed anywhere on the forums.

Third and final Issue: Unable to refresh the "File Browser" pane; Folders not listed in order.

I believe this issue first started happening with the same release that the Random order of processing files first occurred. There seems to no longer be any way to refresh the file listings in the File Browser. I think it was a right-click option previously but can't really remember. All I know is as new folders are created in the destination directory they don't seem to reorder the tree structure and as the files are not processed in order the folders are not created in order. It is very annoying that the folders are not listed alphabetically.

I'm sure there is likely a quick fix for my first issue regarding my naming script and the releasetype field. If someone can tell me how get just the last releasetype listed I say "thank you" in advance. As for the other two issues, hopefully the developers will find reasons to make them a priority for a future release. Thanks again for such a fantastic and wonderful software solution to the task of managing a large music collection.
