Topic: Censored track names?

Hi,

How should I deal with censored track titles.
E.g. track 1 from this album:
http://musicbrainz.org/release/ad4bfef3 … d39e35a654
According to the cover the title is called "I'm the #%!*&% Murderer":

Should I correct it to the title of the cover?

Thank you

Re: Censored track names?

Hi,

yes, you should! With NGS, the tracklist can be pretty close to the actual tracklist (of course without font colors / sizes etc.), and the actual recording can have a more standardized name.

Re: Censored track names?

Okay, thank you!
Just submitted the edit.

Re: Censored track names?

Is this the official guideline of naming?

If so the NGS should keep two names one as on cover and one uncensored. I hate censored track names in my playlist, and after all, even if the title on the cover is censored the song is still named "I'm the Fuckin' Murderer" and everyone will call it so. I can't spell #%!*&% :)

Re: Censored track names?

I think this is official... I also hate spelling mistakes / censored titles in my tags, but that is no problem since Picard has the "Use standardized names" option. With this activated, the "correct" title gets used!

Re: Censored track names?

Thanks a lot for the info!
But I can't find the "use standardized names" option. Could you tell me where I can find it?
Thanks

Re: Censored track names?

It is only available in Picard 0.15 (beta). You can download it here: http://musicbrainz.org/doc/MusicBrainz_Picard

Re: Censored track names?

Thank you! But I still can't find the option ;-)

Re: Censored track names?

Options -> Options -> Metadata :-)

Re: Censored track names?

I have a localized version of Picard and still can't find it :-)
Following options I have (loosely translated):
- use latin scripts for artist names whenever possible
- convert Unicode punctuation chars to ASCII
- use album relationships
- use title relationships
- use folksonomy tags for genre

And than there are custom fields:
various artis: Various Artists
titles without album: [non-album tracks]

Re: Censored track names?

I'm very sorry, my mistake! The option was added in the development version of Picard, which is still unreleased... but it can't be that long before a new (beta) version comes out.

Re: Censored track names?

No problem!
Good to know about this feature. I'm looking forward to it.

Re: Censored track names?

I'm not sure what you do in this situation...

Atmosphere recording:  http://musicbrainz.org/recording/ee4e18 … 5d35ab5994

Printed on the back of the CD case is F*@k You Lucy.  However, the liner notes refer to the song by its unedited name.

Should I leave it as it is because of the liner notes?  Or do I only go by the back of the CD case?

Re: Censored track names?

I would use the uncensored name. I believe it's a common misconception that back covers using censored words is somehow artist intent. It's much more likely due to regulatory concerns in most countries to "protect minors" who might stumble through the music in a CD store, and thus a decision probably made by label types to increase number of retail stores able to stock a release, not the artists.

Also worth noting that the original comment by hrglgrmpf that implies with with NGS we are keeping back-cover-titles instead of standardising is now not really correct (the guidelines were clarified after this) and indeed the Picard function disussed above was removed for track/recording titles, as it doesn't really work.
