Topic: MULTI-album releases?

I've been looking a bit at Encyclopedia of Jazz from Membran Ltd.  ... it's a five-part work, each
of which contains 100 CD's with around 20-25 tracks each.

First few entries here: http://musicbrainz.org/release/095f647f … cc10cb5ed4

(All artists and track titles are provided in machine-readable form, so it's less of
a job that it first seems.)

While it would be possible to enter CD's 'separately', the 'release' would lost (which is the 100CD box),
and the structure would need to be inferred from the title (Encyclopedia of Jazz, Part 3: Big Band,
Volume 002: Fletcher Henderson 1932-33), and it would look like the CDs are releases, which they aren't ...

But will entering 100 discs work? Or would it just be an exercise in futility?

(Added: Looks like tagging might have problems, for example ...)

Re: MULTI-album releases?

If I am not mistaken each volume should have a release and box-set as release-group. Take a look at http://wiki.musicbrainz.org/Style/Release_Group

edit: sorry I guess the my English sucked again, what I meant was, there should be one Release-group for box-set and inside that RG, one release for each volume.

Are you sure about that?

I had got the impression that Release Group is a collection of the same audio material (or close enough)  in new forms: on LP, on CD, perhaps on tape even, and possibly including later reissues.  And that Release was each separate .... well, ... each unit that would be sold on first issue (or something like that -- haven't been able to find a formal definition.)

I see that the page you linked to says:

What should not be grouped together?
[...]
Series consisting of different volumes (typically released over a period of time) should have different release groups for each volume.

That would mean that each Part of this Encyclopedia of Jazz makes sense as a Release Group on its own. So formally, yes, that's the way to do it. (Unless the term 'volume' is restricted in its application.)

But ... does it make sense in practice? Will a search hit get a Track column with 100 entries -- and so span something like 40 lines? That is not practical.

And I've discovered that I can't tag the MP3s from vol. 001 with Picard -- no green 'tagger' on separate CDs in a release ... which is a bit of a disappointment. (Seems like Picard looks for complete releases, not single CD's or Discs, for tagging. Odd ...)

Re: MULTI-album releases?

Only if each volume is sold separately they should have separate release groups, if they are only sold as a box-set they shouldn't.
and even if you enter them as separate release group you should still have 100 CD releases in that RG.
and there are already some examples :)) see http://musicbrainz.org/search?query=med … d=advanced

Re: MULTI-album releases?

Thanks for the search links -- that makes it much easier to see what happens with MULTI-cd releases.

For example, they seem impossible to open -- at least from where I am -- gives me '502 Bad Gateway' every time :-)

you should still have 100 CD releases in that RG.

That's the part I don't understand.  If I have 100 CD releases in one RG, does that not imply that those 100 are
very closely related as regards the audio material?  Thse 100 I have have none or very little relationship.
I am assuming here that RG means 'closely related' releases. But if CD 1 has different contents from CD 2,
they are not related in that way.

What do I misunderstand?

yep same here. also picard can't load them either. maybe you should file a bug report. see http://tickets.musicbrainz.org

filed a bug report: http://tickets.musicbrainz.org/browse/MBS-4612

Re: MULTI-album releases?

Ideally, they should be one release. Since that's... complicated right now, as you've seen, leaving them in a specific release group for the boxset but unmerged for now might make sense.

Re: MULTI-album releases?

Hehe, loading the 100cd set example from #4 gives me a 502 gateway error by the way :-s

Re: MULTI-album releases?

That's why I said it was complicated. It works for some people, times out for others, but in any case it takes a ridiculous amount of time. Hope that can be fixed at some point...
