When tagging music files what is the standard guildline for tagging %MOOD% into tracks? What lists are there. What site shows official release mood type?
There is little standardisation or guidelines that I know of. However there is the last.fm plus plugin for Picard that has its own inbuilt list of moods which is applied as a filter on top of Last.fm's user-supplied tags. It was put together by the original author; not sure from which sources.
FWIW, this list is
angry, bewildered, bouncy, calm, cheerful, chill, cold, complacent, crazy, crushed, cynical, depressed, dramatic, dreamy, drunk, eclectic, emotional, energetic, envious
feel good, flirty, funky, groovy, happy, haunting, healing, high, hopeful, hot, humorous, inspiring, intense, irritated, laidback, lonely, lovesongs, meditation, melancholic
melancholy, mellow, moody, morose, passionate, peace, peaceful, playful, pleased, positive, quirky, reflective, rejected, relaxed, retro, sad, sentimental, sexy, silly,
smooth, soulful, spiritual, suicidal, surprised, sympathetic, trippy, upbeat, uplifting, weird, wild, yearningAlright I did come across that before posting this topic, but just wanted to make sure that no other official listing was made. Read this gave me a headache because now I want to implement the following tags into my music library:
Genre
Style
Category (implement)
Mood (implement)
Occasion (implement)
So many wrong things I have made with properly tagging the 'Genre' section of my music library. I know there is Content Group but that is useless I'd rather see Genre be read as top-level and style be read as the bottom of the list.
What is "style" and what does it mean? What tag in various formats would you actually use? Picard doesn't have anything called this.
The normal way of handling "top level" and "specific" genres is to use "Grouping" for the top level (metal) and then "Genre" for the specific (thrash metal, death metal, melodic death metal for example).
Where are you going to get this data from? With what player app are you hoping to be able to use/view this data?
Picard can only handle these so anything in addition has to go into TXXX or COMM frames for ID3; for things like Vorbis it's just another comment, so no big deal as long as your player will display it.
What is "style" and what does it mean?
If you refer to a release over at !Discogs you get their format for writing up music detail. For them 'Genre' is top level and 'Style' is for specific. For example:
Genre: Electronic; Hip-Hop
Style: Hardcore Hip-Hop; Abstract
Where are you going to get this data from?
But after some thought, I guess it's better to go with Grouping>Genre instead of Genre>Style. Maybe I can even have all three. Some sites offer very great release genre types such as !RateYourMusic.
for things like Vorbis it's just another comment, so no big deal as long as your player will display it.
I've figured Foobar (and maybe Media Monkey), because of it's use of custom tags. I can't stress on using any other player when I found out about Foobar. Although I do plan to have a media player outside of just using my computer but store media files within a server HDD and just stream music from that method. I don't want to find out in the future my tagging method is screwing up a bunch of my files. Although I do stick to the core components (Artist, Title, Album, Year (DD-MM-YYYY), Track #/ Total Tracks, Disc #, Total Disc).
There's no point going with something called "Style" if it means nothing to any players. At the end of the day, it's just abstraction/terminology - it's more important to decide where to get the data from. :) But you didn't answer this question. Where are you going to get the data from? Manually entered? Manually copied from Discogs? Last.fm via last.fm+ plugin?
Anyway, many players handle grouping/genre. last.fm+ calls it Major Genre and Minor Genre and you can adjust its whitelists to classify whatever you like. Also, last.fm plus was originally designed with MediaMonkey in mind, and its guide includes how to use MediaMonkey to see custom tags etc.
As long as you use ID3 v2.3 for maximum compatibility adding extra fields is unlikely to screw up your files. You can always strip the extra fields later if you decide you don't want them or the data isn't as tidy as you want.

I manually enter them using MP3Tag which is depend HEAVILY on since I can't find anything better. I actually do use MusicBrainz for some releases but I don't get the exact right release since most of my music library is filled with digital releases. For auto tagging I prefer to use Foobar's Discogs tagger since you can set custom mapping to the name output desired, unlike MP3tag's Discogs scripts (manually set output tag name). I can on Discogs, Juno, Beatport, Boomkat, etc as long as it's the right release format.

I just installed the last.fm+ plugin and i'm willing to try it, but I never saw last.fm as a music source because it just doesn't look user friendly.

I never realized this. I don't even check the tag version. Is it alright to immediately convert music files to the latest version of ID3 and start tagging away? Most of my media file tags do show up on Foobar though so I guess I'm safe.
Do you know any 'Living Room' type media player that can stream music via server and support custom tagging? Not looking for 'brand exclusive' media player per se (iTunes is a good example [I hate it]).

If it's being used as an automated data source, why is user friendliness is important? You'd be leveraging the way other users have classified music there, rather than directly using it yourself.

I didn't say to use the latest version, I said that ID3 v2.3 would maximise compatibility. :) 2.4 is more recent, but less consistently supported.

Nothing I'd go as far as to recommend.
