Topic: Re-release in box set

Hi,  I have a box set, of which 5 discs are re-releases, and 1 disc is a new release.

How does one go about entering these?  Here is what I was thinking:

(1) Enter data for all the original albums, add extra release for box set
(2) Create release group for box set
(3) For each re-release, do something (???) to link release from album release group to box set release group
(4) Add release to box set release group for original disc

Thanks!
Greg

Re: Re-release in box set

Terminology is very different in NGS.

So what happens now is that you

(1) check whether original releases releases and tracklists are in the DB. If not, add them the normal way you would. Forget about the box set for now.
(2) Add a new RG and Release for the Box Set with the name of the Box Set, release date/label of box set etc - you can do this at the same time, you don't have to add the RG separately
(3) Now you use "Add disc" with "existing tracklist" to search for the tracklists from the 5 original releases already in the DB.

So what you end up with (2 discs for simplicity)

RG Album 1 > Release Album 1 > Tracklist A > N tracks > N recordings
RG Album 2 > Release Album 2 > Tracklist B > M tracks > M recordings

RG Box Set 1 > Release Box Set 1 > Tracklist A > N tracks > N recordings
                                   Tracklist B > M tracks > M recordings

So the Box set now shares the /tracklists/ with the original releases since they are identical. Think of a release in NGS like a "release event" was in old-MB. It's really just a set of labels/cats and a release date/country.

Re: Re-release in box set

Thanks I will give it a try.

Where do I put in the title of the disks?  I would have expected this:

RG Box Set 1 > Release Box Set 1 > Disk title 1 > Tracklist A > N tracks > N recordings
                                   Disk title 2 > Tracklist B > M tracks > M recordings

Re: Re-release in box set

In the advanced version of the tracklist editor, there is a field "Title" under the "Format" field. Previous disc subtitles should go here now :-)

I was just showing the core entities above. Technically speaking, the disc title is an attribute that belongs to the "medium", which you can think of as the link between a release and its N tracklists. So the medium specifies the name "(bonus live recordings", perhaps) and format (CD, Digital Media) of the tracklist. This is what allows tracklists to be shared between CD and Digital media releases, say.

Re: Re-release in box set

Hi VIU,

I think I got the general idea.  Thanks!

So far so good, but after adding the 5 re-releases, the tracklist preview shows this:

Disc 0
Disc 1: 銀蝶渡り鳥
Disc 2: 梶芽衣子のはじき詩集
Disc 3: オリジナルベスト12〜やどかり〜
Disc 4: 去れよ、去れよ、悲しみの調べ
Disc 5: きょうの我が身は……

What is up with Disc 0?  Did I do it right?  Should my discs be numbered 0-4 or 1-5?

Re: Re-release in box set

That seems weird/buggy. :-/ Can you replicate it?

Re: Re-release in box set

Yes, I can reproduce.

You are on the "tracklist" page
Hit "add disk"
Enter a disc information in disc 2
Delete disc 1
You should have a single disc, it will be labeled as disc 1
Hit "next>>" to "recordings" page
Hit "<<previous" to "tracklist"
You now have an empty disc 0, and your disk is labeled disc 1
