Topic: Spambot alert!

Apologies if this is the wrong subforum, but we've got spambots making edit comments:

Re: Spambot alert!

I also apologize if this is already known and being taken care of and if this isn't the preferred reporting procedure.

Re: Spambot alert!

Just to keep a record, they are on to their 2nd ID

Re: Spambot alert!

I had many spams by http://musicbrainz.org/user/gladeriaen
Good report method but I think linking the user instead of the many spams is better.
Yours are http://musicbrainz.org/user/uggwholesale and http://musicbrainz.org/user/louboutinsspike
edit actually you’re right as we cannot search a user’s edit notes (SEARCH-148).
Here is mine then http://musicbrainz.org/edit/15666963

Re: Spambot alert!

There are thousands of spambots who have registered lately. A hotfix should be released soon to deal with the problem - it's on the works right now.

Re: Spambot alert!

Yes I have some many ones, do you want that I list them edit pages? or is it useless?
nerjoeltiffany, fireturbo, outletnorthface, adneyhenr.

Re: Spambot alert!

Editors now need a confirmed mail address and 10 accepted edits to write edit notes on other people's edits. This should fix the problem. If it does not, please let us know! :)

Re: Spambot alert!

Please continue to report any spam in this thread, I'll make sure the information gets passed on.
A link to one of the edits the spammer has left a note on is definitely best IMO (there's no need to link multiple ones for the same spammer though).

Do you have a link to an edit for nerjoeltiffany or fireturbo? The rest should have been deleted now.

Re: Spambot alert!

fireturbo : 15668050 15668016 15668010
nerjoeltiffany  : same edits
but it seems they are also already deleted by now :)

Re: Spambot alert!

It seems on with admin rights could watch this last user list regularly, I often see spam accounts (with spam signatures and/or spam posts).

Re: Spambot alert!

It's easier to just watch for new posts and ban the accounts as they make a post. Which I do approximately 3 times a week.

Re: Spambot alert!

Voiceinsideyou, do you think we could make a list of things for admins to watch out for?
I just found four recently-created accounts with spam links in their signatures and under "Website" (which IME are obvious giveaways of a spammer).
I think a little background info may be necessary here: I was a forum moderator on another site a few months back, and there I learned that there are people who are paid to make spam accounts on websites. The two accounts I banned had IP addresses from India. I know this site has a diverse userbase and this might set off alarm bells for some, but do you think we should apply extra scrutiny based on where users' IP addresses originate from?

Re: Spambot alert!

Hmm, yes, this is a bit of a problem. I'm not sure a lot can be done about it to some extent. All I can do is ban them and clear out their signatures/spam links, but to be honest, I have better things to do. As long as they're not filling up the actual threads with posts I don't personally care too much if there are spam links in google indexing of the forums that helps their Google pagerank.
