Topic: How to update genre only?

I have several folders with music files, these files contain proper tags and I would like to update genre for them only (not touching other fields). All fileds contain id3v1 tags only and I don't want to add id3v2 tags.
How can I do the same with Picard?

Re: How to update genre only?

No, this is not possible with Picard, unfortunately.

Re: How to update genre only?

even usage of some plugin will not help me?
if not, would you recommend some other software?

Re: How to update genre only?

No, it is core behaviour of Picard that causes at least basic fields such as artist, title, album, albumartist to be updated. It's also not possible to write ID3v1 alone.

I don't know any software that meets these requirements; but then again, so few people care about ID3v1 anymore that I've not delved much into which apps tag with ID3v1 alone.

Re: How to update genre only?

ok, thanks for your reply
(hope next versions of Picard will allow plugin authors to control which fields are updated and whether id3v2 is used or not)

Re: How to update genre only?

The second part is unlikely to be changed, I would guess. Why would you want to tag with ID3v1 only? It only supports 30 characters (ASCII) and an extremely limited set of fields. Why not tag with both?

The first issue is http://tickets.musicbrainz.org/browse/PICARD-19

Re: How to update genre only?

I already have big collection of files with id3v1 only, don't want to spend additional time (by updating id3v2) while updating genre for them.

Re: How to update genre only?

This will likely take very little additional time; likely close to zero. The purpose of tagging tools such as Picard is to automate conversion between and of various tags types; so it will likely take very little longer to update both than one. I don't think your reason makes sense, to be honest.

The only sensible reason I can think of would be "i have a 10-15 year old buggy mp3 player/car stereo which doesn't work with id3v2 and doesn't ignore the id3v2 tags correctly"; but still haven't come across one of those any time recently.

Re: How to update genre only?

You are right, I am too conservative with regards to the tags ;) - I've spend a lot of time by correcting them in my collection and now I don't want to allow any program to touch it ;)

unless I'm mistaken musicbrainz doesn't carry genre metadata?

Re: How to update genre only?

No and yes. Though there is no field for genre in the schema (and IMO there shouldn't be, but that's another matter), Musicbrainz does allow users to tag artists and releases, and Picard can use those tags to add genres to your files.

Re: How to update genre only?

Or use Jaikoz from Paul Taylor

Re: How to update genre only?

I imagine most people who use Picard to tag genres don't use MB's own folksonomy tags; and instead use either the lastfm or lastfmplus plugins, which are far superior.
