Topic: how do you edit a release artist w/o editing track artists that match?

maybe i'm missing something here, but i'm sure this was possible before - i can't seem to figure out how to go about changing the release artist credit w/o also changing any matching track credits in that release that you don't want changed. the only solution now seems to be: you fix the release artist credit first and then fix the track credits - individually. and that's a pain, especially when you have multiple artist credits for each track.

as an example, see http://musicbrainz.org/release/d472b2cf … 5f0bb3d0b/ (a work in progress)

both Beethoven and Haydn need to be credited for the release, but the tracklist is comprised of works split between them. so there's no apparent way i can make the edit w/o having to then go back to revert the track credits that had also been changed.

The behaviour of changing the release artist has gone back and forth multiple times, but this is the way it was left after http://tickets.musicbrainz.org/browse/MBS-3102

It does suck to have to go back and fix the track credits; but consider the alternative; the more common case for a single-artist release - mostly you want changing the release artist to change all the track artists too. Without adding complexity (even more bugs than there are already) to the release editor, there's not a good way for knowing the user's intention. There used to be a "change track artists" checkbox to make it obvious what the intention was, but this was removed in http://tickets.musicbrainz.org/browse/MBS-2246 - it confused people a lot, although I personally think that was more to do with the edit previews being often incorrect at the time, rather than the box itself being incorrect. I personally disagree with its removal, and didn't fully see what problem removing it was intended to solve. But yeah, water under the bridge. Maybe the subject can be opened again some time, with some fresh ideas of how to address the problem. The release editor has been improved a lot since then, and at the time I think the dev team were mainly trying to put out the fires.

The only effective way to make edits like you need to above is to install http://userscripts.org/scripts/show/118491 , fix one track artist credit and then use this to copy it back to other credits. It's crap, I agree.

That script is basic for any classical music editing anyway, if one wants to follow the new guidelines. Which kinda sucks.

alright then, i suppose somebody's weighed the pros and cons and taken a decision. thanks for pointing me to that userscript. will give it a try.
