Topic: Japanese imports

Hi,

I think this is a simple question, but I didn't really see it addressed in the FAQ.

I have a Japanese import CD which is basically another label's release but with a little paper sleeve over the end with the band name and title translated to Japanese and the Japanese label's name and release #. The rest of the product is the same except for an additional insert. The disc id is unchanged, etc.

Should this be entered as a new release? Should (or can) any of the Japanese aspects be added?

In the current system, it should probably be entered as a new release since the release country is different. You can add a new release based on the tracklist from the existing release. You'd need to re-attach the disc ID though.

I'm not sure about using the transliterated Japanese title/name from the obi if it's not changed on the cover; personally I wouldn't do this. It's quite common for obis to have transliterated names (as it is for Amazon.co.jp to list the artist/title in Japanese) but if the cover isn't changed, I don't think it should change the metadata. Some time soon we will have cover art integration, and hopefully then it will be possible to upload a picture/scan of the obi linked to the Japanese release specifically, which would capture this info :)

You can always add it to the release annotation if you feel like it though :)

You could also add a pseudo-release in Japanese and link it.

Ah, thanks for the info, including an alternative definition of obi for my Japanese vocabulary!

Japanese editions of foreign records usually often contain some bonus trucks.
Please check it out and sometimes, some labels (like Hostess Entertainment Unlimited. for instance), reproduce verbatim back cover picture of original edition and so, the bonus tracks are only seen on the obi — which happens to be often cumborsome with that same label (like too big to be put in the box).
So what I mean is that check out the actual track count, they are not always printed on outer package and the obi might be lost because of said cumbersomeness.
Example of such owned records Anna Calvi, Blood Pressures.

That makes sense to me, but what if the Japanese info is on a fake obi (fauxbi? :-)) integrated into a redesigned cover?  Example: www.amazon.com/gp/product/images/B0002J51N0/

It's perfectly correct to add a pseudo-release with the Japanese titles and link it to the original titles - they don't need to always get used to make Japanese into English! :)
