Topic: Da Brat sortname

Am I the only one who thinks that Da Brat's sortname should be "Brat, Da".  Da is just slang for The.  I'd like to make the change but not if it's just going to be voted down.

From the style guide:
Group artist names beginning with an article (a, an, the, etc.) have the article moved to the end of their sort name, unless guideline 2a applies.

Examples:
The
Los Lobos has sort name "Lobos, Los"
The Beatles has sort name "Beatles, The"

Re: Da Brat sortname

There is logic to that; but I still bet she's listed under D in most music stores :)

Re: Da Brat sortname

I usually apply capitalization rules for articles when they're slangified too, but I've never thought about the implication for sort names. I'd go for Brat, Da too.

Re: Da Brat sortname

Would you also apply this to e.g. D'Angel?

I feel like if somebody goes through the trouble of using a stylized spelling, it should be considered part of the name rather than merely an article. I also have to wonder, will treating "Da" as "The" help people find what they're looking for?

I do agree with lowercasing "da" in titles, but I wouldn't do it in a name, e.g. "I can't find da Brat's new CD because I don't know her sortname." Unless, I guess, that's how the artist writes it (example).

Re: Da Brat sortname

I guess I don't see it as a stylized spelling, to me it's just the way people talk.  I don't see it as any more or less stylized than Los Lobos.  I did a search for "da " and it looks like we've treated as "the" in about 20% of the names.

Sure. But I would also say "I can't find The Cure's new CD" and not "the Cure's". And I would definitely sort it as "Cure, The". I would also lowercase "da" in the middle of a name, as in "Trademark da Skydiver"...
