Topic: Multi CD ripping issues

I do not known if this is a known issue.

When I rip subsequent CDs from a multi-CD album the titles are correct but the first track (from the CD) is repeatedly ripped for all tracks associated with the next CD.

For example
Bitches Brew
CD 1
Pharaoh's Dance
Bitches Brew
Spanish Key
John McLaughlin
Miles Runs The Voodoo Down
(all of these are correctly ripped)
CD 2
Sanctuary
Feio (but Sanctuary has been ripped over this track)

If there were more tracks on the 2nd CD all would be titled correctly but have Sanctuary ripped.  This is true or all of my multi-CD sets.
Anyone know of a solution?

Re: Multi CD ripping issues

It's a problem with your CD ripper. Which one are you using? If you're using the most recent version of it and it still doesn't work properly, the only solution really is to try a different program... :/

Re: Multi CD ripping issues

Maybe it’s a CCCD (Copy Control CD) or some funny stuff like that…
I have many protected CDs but never had problem ripping them with foobar2000  for instance.
Actually my most effectively protected CD (A NEW MORNING) was impossible to copy with some programs, the tracks were all jumbled and they did not start at the songs’ beginning etc.
In this case, if I remember correctly, I had to use EAC.
Try this maybe.

Re: Multi CD ripping issues

I doubt that's it. The problem is that the NGS schema changes were so big that we couldn't provide full backwards compatibility. The way most CD rippers look up discs makes it nearly impossible for us to do anything about it, the queries they do simply don't give us enough information to be able to mimic the old behaviour. The result is that the affected programs end up seeing the tracks from the first disc no matter which disc of the release they look up and the only real solution is for those programs to use the new webservice.

Reading this I didn’t see relation with Musicbrainz, I thought daniel had ripping problems, but I’m not english master anyway.

But if it’s MB problem, I think it’s good to know that I never had multi-disc problems with foo_musicbrainz (for foobar2000) except that it currently has another bug that is good to keep in mind and check titles after tagging: «takes titles from recordings instead of from tracklist» (#35).

Re: Multi CD ripping issues

I am using Sound Juicer for ripping and Rhythmbox (Rbox) for playing.

Sound juicer cen't even play the effected tracks.  It just lists all the tracks in one long list with out indicating that they are on different CDs.  Rbox doesn't even know they exist but can play them as unrecognised tracks.  I ripped them on my desktop (XP OS) and transferred the tracks to my laptop (Ubuntu).  Unfortunately, Rbox still doesn't acknowledge the tracks (they don't even show up in my queue) but I can force Rbox to play them by opening the file, highlighting the tracks and forcing Rbox to play them.

Ya, this may well not be a MB issue but since all of this software uses MB to sync and the disks are not locked or protected I thought I would ask.  nikki could be right but the strange thing is that the 1st track of the subsequent disk is the one which is repeated.  I have a 5 disk Carter family boxed set and the first track of disks 2 - 5 are the only ones ripped, over and over again.  Disk one is perfect.  The Beatles "White" album is the same,  DMB Listener Supported etc...

Is it a setting issue with my ripper.  Something that I could implement using a command line (there is no option in the menus to direct the ripper to a second CD).

Thanx everyone.

Re: Multi CD ripping issues

Sound Juicer and Rhythmbox need to be fixed and/or updated for your system. There is no other solution. Personally, I'm completely lost as to which Ubuntu versions they released fixes on for which issues and there are a sea of complaints around the bug tracking systems still.

I'd ensure you're using the latest Sound Juicer and Rhythmbox for your version in any case. I believe at least with Rhythmbox it may only be fixed in the OneIric package.

Which Ubuntu version?

Re: Multi CD ripping issues

Have you tried ripping without connecting to MB for tagging?  I've never used SoundJuicer, but there should be a way to just get it to name the tracks Track01, Track02, etc.  That would at least isolate the problem to see if the MB portion matters or not.

Re: Multi CD ripping issues

Billy, I could try that but I do want the track data.

Voice, I just installed Sound Juicer last month so it should be the latest version.  I am running Ubuntu 10.04.

Any other rippers and synced players that you all recommend?

Re: Multi CD ripping issues

After a bit more reading and refreshing my memory, I'm afraid the fix has not been backported into lucid. The canonical bug on Ubuntu is https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+sour … bug/797473 and upstream at https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=652972

You need a version 2.32+; whereas 2.28 is the latest official built for lucid.

Another option is Banshee. This should work fine with MusicBrainz in versions 2.10+.

The development team appear to have lucid builds on their PPA for 2.20 which you could try (the main lucid package won't work from what I can tell)

https://launchpad.net/~banshee-team/+ar … shee-daily

A further option is to take the plunge and upgrade to Natty, OneIric or Precise. Later versions are of course more likely to be updated to work, as well as be updated to take advantage of new MB features without hacking around. Banshee and Rhythmbox, at least, work fine on Precise for me - although Sound Juicer still has silly bugs it seems - for some reason it's displaying the disc title as the release title for multi-disc releases even with the latest version.

Re: Multi CD ripping issues

Alternatively, you could rip with one of these apps and then tag with another - that's what MusicBrainz Picard can help you with :) To try latest Picard you can add this PPA

I was suggesting it merely as troubleshooting step.

IC,  I already tried that and it does rip correctly.

I will try Picard as that seems to be the simplest solution.  I'll update my results for anyone who is interested.

Thanks everyone.
