Topic: Scans of label catalogs?

Would it be possible to add something like the cover-art system for labels so we can scan in catalogs?

Re: Scans of label catalogs?

There might be a way in the near future to filter cover art by the release label, if that's what you mean.

Re: Scans of label catalogs?

No. I'm talking about actual catalogs released by various indie labels. Not cover art.

Re: Scans of label catalogs?

To be more straight forward.

Magazines or lists of the albums that these labels produce, correct?

Re: Scans of label catalogs?

I don't think we have a type for that yet. If it's something included with a particular release (like a listing in the back of the booklet or a loose slip of paper found inside the package, both of which I've run across before) then I'd add it. If not, I'd hold off for now. Maybe someone with more knowledge/clearance can fill us in?

Re: Scans of label catalogs?

I don't think there's any plan for it at the moment, no. Just how common is it, anyway? (I assume by now nobody does it anymore, since, you know, internet... but maybe it was quite common before. I've never seen one, myself)

Re: Scans of label catalogs?

I've got a couple dozen for small indie labels--I may have some for distributors as well--all from the early 1990's. The only use they would have would be for filling in missing data/releases. Not a high priority, to be sure. But it may be a nice-to-have.

Indeed it would. Can you show us a picture of what one of these catalogs looks like? It might give us a clue as to where to go to find such a thing (e.g. a library, a used bookstore, etc.).

Re: Scans of label catalogs?

Hey I have some paper catalogues too. I frequently refer to them for those specific labels’ edits.
If I had any time for scanning them I would just put them in some image dump like 23hq, imgur, imageshack or whatever and link them in the MB label’s annotation. But I don’t have time for that. :)

Just a photograph of the outside is good enough. It gives me/us an idea of what one of these catalogs looks like (I assume it resembles a catalog like department stores used to issue). With the knowledge of what to look for I could go someplace like Half Price Books (a chain of used bookstores) and look to see if they have any old catalogs for sale. Heck, even an antique shop might have something.

Re: Scans of label catalogs?

I put one here since it came with a release.

I know I've got some more extensive slumberland cats around. For small indie labels they were typically photocopied booklets. The larger labels would publish their catalogs and send them to record stores. They were never anything fancy, but they are invaluable sources of information.

I've got the Elephant 6 Winter 1994 booklet here as well. It only lists 8 releases, but has info on other labels and (then) upcoming releases.

Re: Scans of label catalogs?

Interesting...
How did you get ahold of these catalogs? Did you work at a record store or something?

Re: Scans of label catalogs?

Some are from my time at a college radio station. I got many of them from the labels directly. Before the Internet labels used to send them to whoever would send them a self-addressed-stamped-envelope. Quite a few of them came with records.

I've never seen any at Half-Price Books, but I've never really looked. They are the kind of thing most people would just throw away.
