Susumu Yokota is a Japanese electronic artist. In the database now as 横田進 / (Susumu Yokota)

I don't speak Japanese but presume the Japanese text is correct.

However :

Artist name for all the album releases are in English as Susumu Yokota. That is what he is known as. I would argue that his artists name is in English.

In 2011-07-24 someone changed from the English name to the Japanese name and with that the last album implies it is written in Japanese.
It is not, the release written all in English. Like the other albums release on a UK label.

I suppose there could be a few Japanese compilations (implied in the MB catalogue http://musicbrainz.org/release/3149f8a1 … 6373992130 CD3 track 5 edit I think this is in English too : http://www.sonymusicshop.jp/m/item/item … C000007631 ) that listed his name in Japanese but I have never seen these.

How do we handle this. I presume the correct thing is to change the artist  back to the English translation but I don't want to start an edit war.

In general how do you handle artist names in Japanese, etc to English?

We tend to use the artist's actual name for the artist name (that'd be the Japanese) since we can use artist credits for the releases if they're in English. You should probably edit the release (and release group) that you know has it in the Latin script, and edit the artist credit to be 横田進 as Susumu Yokota.

I think you are saying that the artist name is now correct as 横田進 and we should change each release where they are in English.
However I try and edit the release and release group and I can only select 横田進 trying to change it to what is on the CD "Susumu Yokota" results in.

"Artist "Susumu Yokota" is unlinked, please select an existing artist. You may need to add a new artist to MusicBrainz first."

Now I don't want to do that. You really want me to create a new artist?

In fact I would argue with this artist that the performance/recording name is "Susumu Yokota" and his real name is  横田進. Because it is a translation is not relevant.

AFAIK every releases have the album title and artist (and every track) written in English for the 10+ albums. Even the Japanese only record label album releases and compilations written in all Japanese use his English translation for the artist.

I more I think about it the more I think I should just change the artist to the English "Susumu Yokota" with a dis-ambiguous/more info of 横田進.  The person that changed it I think a wiki stub with a Japanese name text and used that.

Do you or anyone else have a more compelling reason not to just change the artist?

I own a remix compilation CD  by Dir en grey "改 -KAI-" where he has remixed one track, and the track is entitled "理由 Susumu Yokota Remix" as well as in the booklet he is credited in latin characters as "Remixed by Susumu Yokota" and this is also a Japanese band.
