With the release of this newer version. Should all previous revisions to soundtracks and the like be changed back?

Example would be adding Original Score to the release group and the release

also what separator should be used if that is the case, a colon or ( )?

The guideline is pretty verbose but too few examples throughout, and clicking through some of the examples they don't look the same as shown.

Usually the version should be treated as a subtitle.

I’ve gone through and cleaned up the entities used as examples.

Songs in movies are different things to different movies and it is up to us to decipher how and why each soundtrack is being used.

Hawke, I like version as disambiguatin comment.
Isn’t disambiguation comment for versions in recordings for instacne?
No invention of a separator problem this way!

jesus2099: Going by that there are quite a few reprints or similar that would make a few scores/soundtracks with the same exact name.

An example would be a release for a limited edition and regular. The disambiguation is already taken up by "Original Soundtrack"

There are others like reprints, and different country releases.

So should it be

IMO you should follow whatever is on the cover.

So for the Alan Wake score, you could use something like “Alan Wake: Original Score” (treating it using normal subtitle style)

Or you could just use “Alan Wake” and use the disambiguation comment on the RG to indicate that it’s the score. (and then on the releases themselves you would use the disambiguation to give edition information if it’s not part of the title or otherwise obvious)

I guess my question was with using the subtitle style or not, what makes "original score" "soundtrack" "image album" etc a subtitle and not additional information or just part of the name?

Then when using disambiguation comments, wouldn't Alan Wake as a release group be for all music distributed for Alan Wake and the releases themselves use the disambiguation comment that they are a score or soundtrack. Otherwise with say a Final Fantasy game you will get 4 or 5 release groups for the same exact game just reprints of the soundtrack or maybe different masterings. However that does then limit the editions use or other specific comments that can be made.

Usually subtitles are distinguished by smaller font or punctuation. In the Alan Wake case, it’s smaller font.

but it could also be seen to be just part of the artist credit, not subtitle or title — in that case it is necessary to put it in the disambiguation comment, because we do still need a way to tell the score from the other soundtrack. Of course, since only one of these releases actually have cover art it’s kind of hard to tell for this case.

mfmeunlenbelt: I too thought that was funny when I first saw it, and the one on the perpetual motion machine a few days earlier. You may have to post that image a million times since a good portion of musicbrainz chat is purely about figuring out standards, which means long disagreements.


I would rather this be on the mailing list to be sorted by people who know musicbrainz better than I.

Prior to the new Soundtrack style came, I unknowingly was using the proposed standard, which mentioned to remove score and soundtrack completely, I would like to know how it actually should be entered so I can fix my mistakes. An actual standard would be nice.

My take on it is: If you don’t feel like it’s a title, then don’t put it in the title. (looks like this is what you’re doing). From what I can see it is not necessary to put it in the disambiguation either, since they are on different labels and in different countries. (and therefore unambiguous.)
*BUT* it’s OK to put the disambiguation in too, if you feel it help.

As for release groups, I might also split the collector’s edition away from the others since they don’t seem to have any tracks in common.

The above are all just opinion though, not guideline or fact.
