Topic: Fake labels

Is there any guidance for creating fake labels for releases that aren't traditionally released. I'm thinking in particular of promos given away by magazines. It would be nice to see them listed all on one page somewhere but while sometimes they are given catalog numbers, I think generally they don't have a release label as such.

I notice Discogs appear to do something similar:

Re: Fake labels

I personally don't have problem with this kind of "labels". I did something similar at http://musicbrainz.org/label/aefc3abd-1 … f4229.html [I'm sure somebody who disagrees with this will show up soon :)]

Though I'd very much prefer if we don't make up catalog numbers like Discogs.

I've done the same for NME & a couple of other magazines that regularly give away promo releases.

Agreed.
although I don't know of any made up cat numbers at discogs, there is a few bootlegs listed there that have dubious cat numbers

Re: Fake labels

Well, I don't think most of the Q-mag releases have a real cat numbers, for example. I've seen some other CDs from magazines which have catalog numbers on discogs that are actually only issue numbers/dates of the magazine.

ICK! lets make a styleguideline against that right now! :P

but anyway, this may be related to this: what of releases like this? it is available from CDbaby pretty much only, it doesn't have a catalogue number. no label? what of self released or white-label? these things.

it depends what you define as cat#. in my experience at discogs it is the number written on the CD matrix/vinyl run-out groove that gets used if there's no 'obvious' cat# (ie on the spine or rear sleeve).

i've never seen them being 'made up' - there's a "none" standard cat# to be used in the absence of a real cat#.

Well, here you have 23 examples - http://www.discogs.com/label/XMAG :) I'm sure I could find more. I have a couple of these CDs and they definitely don't have anything like "XMAG 2002/12 (CD1)" written on them. And the people who entered them at Discogs are aware that these CDs don't have any real catalog numbers, see http://www.discogs.com/subs/view/2284801 - this is exactly what I'd like to avoid.

fair enough :) thankfully that stuff must be pretty isolated (probably only magazine type CDs).

though also you sometimes you get cat#s that aren't on the CD, but do actually exist - eg, ones on the labels website. those IMO should be entered as usual.

Re: Fake labels

I kind of disagree with the Magazine type releases.. I'm sure if your were to ask what release a particular cd
was they would say, that's the November 2003 edition. So while redundant in this case to the release event still
think it is worthy and valid. It's not like we came up with a random number.

Re: Fake labels

PS those Q magazine cat#s at http://www.discogs.com/label/Q+Magazine aren't made up - I have one of them and the cat# matches.

another thing i should mention - the release dates for such magazines don't always follow with the issue month. eg, the march edition of Q would most likely come out in february, so best not to assume them.

Good point, I should have mentioned that myself when stated that it being redundant to the release event as it
not always is like stated.

Musicbrainz has SpecialPurposeArtists for works by various artists, no artist etcetera. Maybe a "special purpose label" could be made for self-released releases (also in the light of this discussion)?

Re: Fake labels

The question of "autoreleases" have been raised earlier and indeed it was suggested we may use SpecialPurposeLabel for that.

see

and to a lesser extent

Feel free to go ahead with http://wiki.musicbrainz.org/SpecialPurposeLabel as soon as ideas are shaped enough.

Cheers.
